Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park (Firefly Part Kuala Sealangor)
Kampung Kuantan is know for its fireflies (or Kelip-kelip, as it fondly called by the local) that dwell along Sg Selangor river banks and feeding on the Berembang trees (mangrove trees) that grow well in brackish water. The mangrove trees with its scientific name, Sonneratia Casolaris, can be found until 8 km upstream and 18 km downstream to Kuala Selangor.
A trip to Kuala Selangor would be incomplete without exploring the uniqueness and miracles of the Kuantan Village Fireflies found in the midst of mangrove trees in this small villages. Visitors would experience riding on a traditional sampan (small boat) down the Selangor River and observe the fireflies in close proximity.
Kampung Kuantan is located about nine kilometers from the town of Kuala Selangor, the site is know as one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. Take a small boat into the quite darkness at night and you might find yourself amazingly enthralled by the thousands of fireflies (Kelip-Kelip) that flicker. At dust , the fireflies (Kelip-Kelip) gather in Berembang trees (mangrove trees) to feed on its tree sap and flash to attract a mate. Although both the male and female species light up, only the males do it together in union.

Fireflies and Berembang Tree
Fireflies are a type of insect from the beetle group. The 'Pteroptyx tener' species are the most available species in Kampung Kuantan. The uniqueness that lies in the fireflies is on its tail that produces blinking of light. That makes the fireflies more unique is the blinking of lights produced by the insect simultaneously each time for 3 blinks per second. Among the thousands of fireflies their lights is like a rhythm of lights. Fireflies are only 6mm long. Male fireflies produce a far brighter light compared to the female, to attract the attention of the female fireflies. The life spans of fireflies are from 2 till 3 months.
Berembang tree or 'Sonneratia Caseolaris' is a type of swamp tree that grows wildly at the Selangor Riverside. It needs a tropical climate and swamp surrounding. Berembang tree is important for the fireflies as their source of foods. Other than that, Berembang tree is also important as a habitat that acts as a filter for dirt and poison and producing clean water for the organism in the river.
Firefly Boat Tour
Boats can be chartered at the jetty of Kampung Kuantan for these nocturnal tours. Viewing time starts from sundown at 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm. There is ample parking space for visitors and a good information center where you can also obtain souvenirs. Each boat holds 4 passengers and cost RM 50 per boat. The ticket include a drink and a packet of local snacks.
